CYCLE A | Book 4
Arc of Promise
PREVIEW | Arc of Promise
Wendy Warfield, lawyer and political activist, is a student of the human condition. She has just come up with a new scientific law: confrontations are inevitable. When she looks into her crystal ball, she sees four that are looming.
The first is one she'll bring about herself. It will be to warn her historian friend Tamara Santillana that her so-called research trips are soon going to be unmasked for what they really are. If Kari LaMarca doesn't do the unmasking, law enforcement will. Tamara needs to be alerted to this possibility: she needs to come to grips with the heartbreaking fact that her meticulously designed scheme is about to unravel.
The second confrontation is the one Wendy fears the most. The police are investigating two possible murders, and they'll soon start leaning hard on their suspects, trying to obtain a confession. One of the victims was Wendy's ex-lover, Lorelle Delambre, and Wendy is someone the police have in their sights. But who else will they be going after? Tamara? Others? When Wendy poses these questions to her crystal ball, it immediately fills with murk.
The third confrontation is one that Kari will provoke. She too will soon be drawing a bead on the killer. What she will do then is impossible to predict, because the girl makes a mockery of soothsaying devices.
Confrontation four will happen because Mallory Ballantyne, an investigator under contract to the RCMP, will try to prevent Kari from taking any action at all. He'll tell her to leave the murder to the police. Will she heed his excellent advice? Wendy considers it unlikely.
Arc of Promise, the concluding volume of the Eternity's Sunrise cycle of novels, is where the events Wendy is trying to foresee unfold. Readers will turn the pages anxiously, knowing that crystal balls, being made from hopes as well as purified quartz, cannot be trusted.
